Simana’s Diaries -1- Umay Ana’s Gift
Simana was sitting in front of a tent made of goat hair. In her hands was a stone-carved cup containing half a cup of tea: an olive branch, thyme, and a bit of juniper…
her eyes and thought of the very beginning. The memory of that night came to life in her mind:
That night, the steppe had been shrouded in the silence of the October wind.
a rock. In her palm lay a red fox tail…
earth and water held their breath as they watched. But the baby wasn’t crying. It simply gazed up at the stars; as if it had seen the secret of the heavens even before it was born.
dawn, the women of the camp noticed the baby as they went to fetch water.
The eldest among them, Akçora Ana, sank to her knees. It was as if God had touched her shoulder and pressed her down. She cradled the baby…
her head and looked up at the sky, the star known as the Eye of the Three Foxes had appeared. The women’s eyes filled with tears, for in that moment they realized this was no ordinary baby.
“This child was not abandoned,” said Akçora Ana. “This child was sent. This is a gift from Umay Ana.”
Altai people say: “A people exists not only through its land, but through its beliefs.”
And that people reached God not only when gazing at the sky, but also while milking cows, riding horses, cooking grass, and giving birth. For them, holiness had taken root even in the places farthest from the sky.
And the gentlest face of this sacredness was Mother Umay.
Umay was the mercy within the earth’s bosom, the warmth of a mother’s womb, a child’s first breath, and the power hidden in a woman’s tears.
Umay is not merely a goddess. She is the daughter of the Sky God and the mistress of the Tree of Life. She is the symbol of power, might, sovereignty, fortune, the state, abundance, and fertility.
Many Turkic tribes believe that when babies drink their mothers’ first milk, it is actually Mother Umay who touches their lips with a drop she has taken from the White Lake in the sky.
That is why Umay’s breath is present in every child’s first breath. Simana’s first breath, too, echoed in her silence.
That baby was Simana.
of the earth, but of prayer.
Umay’s palm.
Oba looked at her, they saw not their own children, but a gift from God.
And from that moment on, everyone knew that:
she took would be a prayer rising to the heavens.
existence would be more than just a life—it would also serve as a reminder:
Umay’s power descended to Earth to bring healing, only to return to the heavens once more.
