They remain even after humans are gone.

Every mountain has its guardian. Every home, every hearth, every threshold stone. Every body of water, every forest, every horse… Even every star shining in the sky.

Guardians do not belong to any place; they ensure that a place remains what it is.

They are not considered the owners of anything. But they do not allow anything to become ownerless.

That day, as the sun set, Simana did not light the fire.

This was strange to everyone. Because Simana never let the night begin before the fire. But that day, the fire was silent.

Although the

kindling was dry, no flame rose. The smoke swirled slowly and then settled back down. It was as if the fire had withdrawn into itself.

Simana withdrew her hand. She wasn’t angry at the fire. Because the fire never fell silent without a reason.

She took the water from

the cup. She took a sip.

The

water was cold; but as it passed down her throat, something was missing. Simana didn’t take a second sip.

“You’re closed off too,” she said to herself.

She stepped out

of the tent. She stopped at the threshold. She didn’t step over it. The threshold wasn’t silent that day either.

If the threshold shifted from its place, those inside would not be protected, even if the house remained standing.

She took

a step back and bowed. Then she slowly stepped over it.

He walked toward

the forest. The trees were still in their places, but the forest did not take him in.

The

wind changed direction. The leaves brushed past him, not over him.

He stopped at

Simana. The forest spirit wanted to be alone tonight.

He sat down on

a rock. He placed his palm on the ground. The soil was hard. The spirit of the rock wasn’t bearing any weight today.

At that moment,

Simana raised her head. The sky was clear.

But one of the stars was missing. The star knew she was being watched but did not respond.

At

that moment, Simana understood: No one would speak today.

The

fire had gone out because it had been carelessly extinguished.

The

water had dried up because it had been drunk without thought.

The

threshold had shifted from its place because it had been crossed in haste.

Yet the threshold was not a place—it was the respect between two states.

The

forest had retreated because it had been entered without permission.

The

stone had not borne its weight because its burden had been taken lightly, its weight had been underestimated.

The

star had dimmed because direction had been asked for but not heeded.

The

guardians had not left. They had merely withdrawn their hands.

Simana knelt down. She turned neither to the fire, nor to the water, nor to the sky. She looked at the ground…

That day, she asked for nothing. She called for nothing. She did not attempt to fix anything.

She did

only this: She did not move from her place so that everything might find its rightful place again.

When

evening came, the fire lit itself.

The

water cooled her. It cleared the path to the threshold.

The

forest wind returned.

He closed the door to the

house. The stone grew warm.

The

star shone again.

And then, Simana taught the tribe this:

“If you do not give what is due to what

exists:

What you

possess will not be taken from you. But it will turn its face away from you.

And a world that turns its back on you is the quietest punishment.

When a spirit withdraws, a person doesn’t realize what they’ve lost at first.
But something is missing… Something no longer holds… Something falls apart…

And spirits will continue to walk with you when they are honored with the kindness, respect, and balance you show toward them.”

The origins of these treasures stretch back to the very beginning of time.
